Matthew J. Haertzen, CFA, CFP®

Portfolio Manager, Outsourced Chief Investment Officer

With over 25 years of experience in the investment industry, Matt is particularly skilled in the construction and design of portfolios and manager research. He currently serves as both a Portfolio Manager for Cornerstone Portfolio Research and a Senior Lecturer of Finance for the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona.  His unique combination of investment experience and educational focus helps him understand the intricacies of portfolio design and optimization as he seeks to deliver the highest possible after-tax returns to Cornerstone’s independent RIA clients. In addition, his teaching background has trained him to explain complex investment strategies in understandable terms that can be presented directly to individual clients. Matt is a CFA® Charterholder and a Certified Financial Planner™, which speaks not only to his understanding of investments but also to his focus on high professional and ethical standards.   Throughout his career, Matt has acted as a fiduciary and has always put his clients’ best interests first.

Matt’s investing passion and career success both stem from extensive work experience in the investment community. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with an MBA, Matt began his career with Ameriprise Financial, where he managed a staff of analysts supporting the quantitative mutual fund product line. From there, he went on to work for the University of Minnesota Endowment, a $650 million fund where he was responsible for asset allocation and manager selection. Matt then joined a trust company in Washington, where he was responsible for managing $600 million in large capitalization stocks. He transitioned to manage a combined $1 billion in assets for the Idaho Endowment Fund, Judge’s Retirement System, and the Idaho State Insurance Fund in Boise, Idaho. Matt also consulted for Cogent Partners where he designed a global timber fund that traded publicly on the London AIM Exchange.

Matt was able to leverage his institutional investment experience and transition to working with individuals, which he found to be one of the most satisfying roles in his career.  He built an investment advising business as a founding partner of Four Peaks Wealth Management in Flagstaff, Arizona for several years before ultimately selling the firm.

Matt and his wife have one son who is currently working in corporate tax in Denver, Colorado. In Matt’s free time, he enjoys golfing, fly-fishing, mountain biking, and hiking with his Brittany Spaniel, Rudy.
